The pattern keeps extension logic outside the component being extended. Client code depends
on a common component interface; the concrete component implements the base behavior; each
decorator also implements that interface while holding a reference to another component.
Because the decorator and the component share the same interface, decorators can be stacked
and the final object can still be used where the original component was expected.

Decorator is useful when behavior needs to vary per object at runtime. Subclassing extends
an entire class hierarchy, while decorators can be composed around individual instances.
That makes the tradeoff explicit: decorators provide flexible composition, but too many
nested wrappers can make object construction and debugging harder to follow.

Decorator is related to, but different from, Adapter and Proxy. Adapter changes an interface
so incompatible code can collaborate. Proxy controls access to an object while preserving
the same interface. Decorator preserves the interface while adding responsibilities.
