## TL;DR

Shaders and VFX are where visual goals meet GPU constraints. AI agents can help inspect graphs, explain shader code, summarize material parameters, and produce testable variants, but they need explicit performance budgets and engine context.

## Core Explanation

In production, a shader is not just an image effect. It is part of a material pipeline, render pipeline, platform budget, and art direction. VFX systems add timing, particles, simulation, collision, lighting, and readability constraints.

Useful agent work is narrow:

- explain a shader graph or HLSL snippet;
- detect expensive operations or duplicated material variants;
- generate a checklist for mobile, PC, or console performance;
- compare a visual requirement against a material or VFX graph;
- return a patch that a technical artist can review.

Unsafe work includes silently replacing production materials, changing particle budgets without profiling, or generating engine-specific shader code without stating the render pipeline.

## Source-Mapped Facts

- Unity Shader Graph documentation describes Shader Graph as a tool for building shaders visually. ([source](https://docs.unity3d.com/Packages/com.unity.shadergraph@17.0/manual/index.html))
- Unity Visual Effect Graph documentation describes Visual Effect Graph as a tool for authoring visual effects. ([source](https://docs.unity3d.com/Packages/com.unity.visualeffectgraph@17.0/manual/index.html))
- Unreal Engine materials documentation describes materials as assets that define how surfaces are rendered. ([source](https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/en-us/unreal-engine/unreal-engine-materials))
- Epic's Niagara documentation describes Niagara as Unreal Engine's visual effects system. ([source](https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/en-us/unreal-engine/creating-visual-effects-in-niagara-for-unreal-engine))
- Microsoft documentation describes HLSL as the high-level shader language for Direct3D. ([source](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/direct3dhlsl/dx-graphics-hlsl))

## AI-Agent Operating Notes

When reviewing shader or VFX work, an agent should request:

1. engine and render pipeline;
2. target platform and frame budget;
3. screenshots or captures from the actual scene;
4. profiler output when performance is the question;
5. material, graph, or shader source before proposing changes.

The output should name tradeoffs. For example, "reduces overdraw but changes softness" is better than "optimized".
